Effects of Dietary Deficiencies in Seniors to Watch Out for

Posted on March 4, 2022 by Louise Savoie

effects-of-dietary-deficiencies-in-seniors-to-watch-out-forOur dietary needs change as we age. For instance, during their golden years, our loved ones may have a more difficult time recognizing sensations like hunger and thirst. And without intervention, this may result in the development of dietary deficiencies.

Dietary deficiencies are due to many factors including forgetfulness, growing cognitive impairments, budget concerns that limit how much is spent on food, and medication side effects that would require medication therapy management in California, among others.

These can have serious effects on our senior loved one’s health, commonly resulting in the following conditions:

  • Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia
This is caused by a lack of healthy red blood cells (RBCs) caused by low amounts of vitamin B-12 and folate.
  • Cognitive impairment
Low levels of B12 can increase the risk of cognitive decline. This often occurs with gastrointestinal issues related to absorption and infection.
  • Vitamin D deficiency
Usually, due to decreased sunlight exposure, vitamin D deficiency can lead to bone loss density which may lead to more frequent fractures and a higher risk for osteoporosis and fractures (broken bones).

As your partner in health and your preferred pharmacy in Northridge, California, we encourage you to make changes in their diet first before getting vitamins and supplements to target these deficiencies.

We have a free vitamin club for seniors age 50+ and children 6+ years at Poly-Med Pharmacy. We also offer drive-thru flu shot for your convenience. Drop by today or get in touch with us for more information.
